Stop Calculating Chess Tactics... Do THIS Instead

For thirty years, I have advocated training tactics through repetition on my chess lesson website to build pattern recognition. Both calculation and intuition are important, but strengthening that intuition increases our overall chess ability. Using chessable to make your own tactics problems is an interesting idea.

Playing Online Versus Playing in Person

On chess.com, I was responding to someone who said that they prefer to play "daily games", which are games where each move can take a day or more:

"I understand.

I do not like to play daily games.  I lose any continuity of thought switching between games, especially when games take a long time to finish.

I think that playing games in real time is better for my chess ability.

I much prefer playing people in person.  For one thing, I am more focused, but I also like the camaraderie.

I get some benefit from playing online, but playing an anonymous stranger on the Internet feels too much like playing a computer."
