Re: Long Days of Summer

Steve:  The last-round game between John Coffey and Michael Morris-Pearce was extremely exciting and seems worthy of comment.  Morris-Pearce, who seems to be improving rapidly, played a brilliant positional concept involving the sacrifice of two pawns to obtain a monster passed pawn on d7.  John's position appeared to be on the brink of collapse, but thanks to his prolonged, tenacious defense, he ultimately garnered a full point when he seemed on the brink of taking a "zero" for the round.

John:  Michael is improving rapidly.  He seemed to benefit from the long time control, because after a very long think he offered me a pawn and then a rook sacrifice that caught me completely off guard.  Up to this point I was up a pawn and overly complacent.  It seems that after the rook sac I could have still been winning, but the combination (25. ... Nh3+ 26. Kf1 Rf8!)  was almost too subtle to see over the board.    I also made the mistake running my king to the corner when 26. ... Nf7 would have been better.  After this I found myself having to play nearly perfect moves (according Stockfish on my iPhone) just to stay alive.  On at least one move I offered him my knight (28. ... Nf7)  just so I could reach an unfavorable ending which seemed like my best option.  Later I deliberately gave him a chance to sacrifice his queen (34. Qxf7+!), again so that I could reach an unfavorable ending which was my best option.  Finally I set up a combination where I would give him a rook for a bishop and pawn (37. ... Rxd7)  to once again reach an unfavorable ending, but I was confident enough in my endgame skills to think that I might survive.   However, at this point Michael played the combination wrong and went down 2 pawns.

I am sure that he had multiple ways to win.

This is the strongest 1184 I have ever played.  Even after I reached a won ending, he put up a tough fight.  He feels like someone who could be 1800 in a year.  At long games I am pretty sure he is at least Class B strength already.

As I was leaving the tournament, I saw a clever last round win by Eric Hon against Allen Bolen in a position that I was sure was a draw.

All this tough competition in Utah might discourage people who haven't played in a while from coming back to tournaments.   We have a number of people who will probably reach the expert class in the near future.  Congrats to Bryan Leano for winning the tournament and making 2000.  That is quite an accomplishment.

Thanks to Petro and Grant for their efforts in running the tournament.

Letter to my students: Chess games to review.

It has been my pleasure to teach many people chess ideas mostly by showing them games of mine that I consider to be instructive.  It is also my belief that repetition is important as humans by their nature tend to forget what they have learned.  I have attempted to repeat my lessons with some people, but I have so many students whom I teach on a casual basis that repeating my lessons has become too time consuming to keep doing it.

With that in mind, it is my strong suggestion that you review the following games repeatedly on some regular basis.  Your goal should be to predict the moves that I made.  I am not asking you to memorize the entirety of these games, but to understand them well enough that most of the moves would seem natural and intuitive.  I am always available to answer questions.

I think that understanding these ideas is essential to becoming a Class A player.

http://www.entertainmentjourney.com/g0001.htm  (In this game, try to predict the white moves.)

Additional games that I wish to teach in the future...

http://www.entertainmentjourney.com/g0002.htm  (In this game, try to predict the white moves.)

Best wishes,

John Coffey

Fundamental Chess Openings

For a player just learning the chess openings, this book might be useful.   I suggest going to http://www.amazon.com/dp/1906454132/ and clicking on "Look Inside".

The problem with the book is that it rarely looks at anything past move 10, but  I like the clear presentation which should be just fine for someone who just wants an introduction to the chess openings.

Re: Grand Prix Report – Game-in-Sixty

Allan,

So far this year I am the Utah state Senior champion, Game/60 champion, and Expert Class co-champion.  It seems not likely to me that I could win the actual State Championship in November, but it is a remote possibility.

The best player in the state is a 15 year old boy, Kayden Troff, who is currently playing in the U.S. Championship because he got a special invitation as an up and coming player.   He is so far above everybody else in Utah that it is no contest.  He is an International Master and could turn pro. He mostly does not bother with Utah tournaments anymore.

It doesn't take much to interfere with my concentration.  Cheerleaders would do it.   :-)

Best wishes,

John Coffey

Way to go! Kick some ass! I'm cheering for you. Do they have cheerleaders there? I guess it'd be a big distraction.

my doubts about whether black really played 26. ... a5; Maybe he
played b4 instead or maybe something else. Since I didn't keep

I was down to 8 seconds at the end. I had a very difficult time in
the opening and burned up too much time.

Re: Hi

Jeff,

It is really hard to improve.   I crossed over 1800 around 1985 mainly because I was good at tactics and speed chess but had few others skills.   I  stagnated there until 1988 when I moved to Lafayette Indiana where I lived for 39 months.  While there I played chess at least a couple times per week at the Purdue Chess Club and outside of the club as well.  It helped me that the Purdue Chess Club had really strong players.  I also used to practice against computers and memorize whole games.  I also studied king and pawn endings pretty thoroughly which has helped me enormously.     I saw my rating rise up to 2079 and then go down.  This is the point where I should mention that ratings then were inflated compared to ratings now.  The USCF has made major changes to their rating system, and the bottom line is that is my 2000+ rating now is much tougher to get than my 2000+ rating back then.

After moving to Utah in 1993 my rating dropped all the way to 1800.   There was a feeling in Utah a the time that Utah players were way underrated.  This isn't as true as it used to be.

Back around 1999 I decided to make a big push to get to Master by memorizing 200 opening lines in 200 days.  This took more like 2 years and did not help me one bit.  It was a waste of time.

It was after this I began to feel that studying tactics was the better approach.   I studied the book Sharpen Your Tactics and some other tactics books and very quickly went from 1800+ to 1900+.  The amount of tactics study necessary to make this work is somewhere between 10 and 30 minutes per day, but I have seen other people have much more impressive results by studying 60 to 90 minutes per day.

Only recently I have been able to go from 1900+ to 2000+ by doing the following …

I like studying whole games and go over them repeatedly while trying to guess the moves.  I have spoken with a near master in Louisville who does the same thing.   This particular player went up a hundred points over the last year or two.

I am a huge believer in repetition because I think that the human brain is inherently forgetful.

Getting a good source of games is difficult because there are so many sources out there that it is information overload.  It is hard to know what is the best to study.  I am going to suggest The Art of Positional Play and Logical Chess Move by Move.

But first I would start with the games on my website at:

 http://www.entertainmentjourney.com/openings.htm

I still tend to spend too much time studying openings even though I think that studying games is more useful.

Best wishes,

John Coffey
